Carmen ZapataSpending my early childhood in Nicaragua before moving to the United States influenced the way I see the world in general.  By the time I finished high school I was quadrilingual, and had visited and lived in five countries.  My experiences instilled in me a sense of purpose and a worldly perspective.  From childhood, I was intent on becoming an engineer and being engaged in public policy in one way or another.  Not only was I interested in the theories of operations research, supply chain management, and emergency relief, I was interested in the application of these fields specifically in developing countries.  After a year of studying industrial engineering at Columbia University, I realized that engineering and public policy are not mutually exclusive fields, in fact, I argue that they depend on one another for successful implementation of realistic and effective policies and developments.  During my sophomore year I joined the Institute for International Public Policy (IIPP), a fellowship program which led me to discovering the MEPP program at the University of Maryland.  The MEPP program significantly helped me to expand my perspectives on the issues of policy and planning, which ultimately gave me a competitive edge when applying for internships and my now current full-time position with LMI.  LMI is a not-for-profit government consultancy that strives to help leaders and managers make a difference for our nation in all aspects of government.  My MEPP education has vastly made a difference in what I have to offer as a research fellow in the Logistics Technology group at LMI.  I look forward to the opportunities ahead that will allow me to make a difference with my education.
