Federal Government Critical Hiring Needs 2007 - 2009
Employment and Internship Opportunities at the Joint Global Change Research Institute in College Park, MD
The Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) is searching for researchers in a broad range of disciplines with the potential to become leaders in interdisciplinary research on global climate change. JGCRI research focuses on greenhouse gas emissions scenarios, approaches to emissions mitigation, response strategies, and climate impacts. At the core of JGCRI's research program is an "integrated assessment" computer modeling framework that combines models of the human and Earth system, including energy and economy, land-use, agriculture, climate, and ecosystems. New directions for JGCRI include expanding the capacity to assess climate impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability, and deepening links with Earth System Models.
JGCRI researchers publish in leading journals and work with scientists and decision-makers in universities, federal agencies, state governments, industry, and foundations. JGCRI researchers are leaders in the international and national climate and global change research communities through prominent roles in forums such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the U.S. Climate Change Science Program (CCSP), the U.S. Carbon Cycle Scientific Steering Group, the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), and Global Observations of Forest and Land Cover Dynamics (GOFC-GOLD). Located in College Park, Maryland, JGCRI is a partnership between the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and the University of Maryland at College Park.
JGCRI has an ongoing interest in researchers at all levels and from a range of backgrounds, including earth sciences, economics, ecology, engineering, social sciences, and operations research. The work environment is highly collaborative, and the research is interdisciplinary, focused on solutions to one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. Examples of current research foci include the economic implications of potential domestic and international climate policies, technology strategy for climate change, uncertainty and climate, agriculture and land use, climate impacts, and options for adaptation. JGCRI researchers are expected to conduct research and analysis, interact with government and private-sector decision-makers, contribute to the collaborative development of JGCRI's modeling tools, and publish in peer-reviewed journals. If you are interested in employment or internship opportunities at JGCRI, please send a resume and cover letter to Paulette Land at pwright2@umd.edu. Many departments in the federal government compete to hire May graduates in a fall open season, that varies, but typically lasts until some time in November. Summer internship applications and hiring are often folded into the same process. Some departments hold open houses, also in the fall. MEPP students are encouraged to search jobsusa.gov, and the websites of all federal departments for which they may wish to work in the following year, early in the fall.
